Local experts collaborate with UPLBFI to develop a CRVA framework for the fisheries sector

The University of the Philippines Los Baños Foundation, Inc. (UPLBFI) led a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) among fisheries experts in the Philippines for the development of a Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) framework for the fisheries sector (Capture Fisheries and Aquaculture). The activity was held last 04 August 2022 via Zoom.

Present during the FGD workshop were Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos (Scientist IV of NFRDI), Mr. Edison Roi Macusi (Associate Professor at the Davao Oriental State University), Dr. Dennis Tanay (Chief Aquaculturist of BFAR National Fisheries Development Center), and Mr. Leo Kris Palao (Senior Research Associate of the Aliiance of Bioversity and CIAT). The UPLBFI project team was represented by Mr. Carl Earvin Carada (GIS Specialist), Mr. Jonathan Austria (Data Management Specialist), and Ms. Julie Ann Barril (Project Documentation Specialist).

During the meeting, Dr. Santos and Mr. Austria presented an overview of the UPLBFI-led project. Mr. Carada and Mr. Palao then facilitated the presentation of the proposed CRVA framework, initially developed by the project team together with NFRDI. Mr. Macusi and Dr. Tanay, who served as experts, provided significant feedback and suggestions regarding the various climate indicators and components presented in the proposed framework.

The UPLBFI project team is set to consolidate the feedback and suggestions from the experts to finalize the framework. The CRVA framework for the fisheries sector will be operationalized in pilot areas in the Cagayan Valley region and is aimed to be scaled out to other regions in the Philippines.
